Do you know the struggle?

Being from Houston myself than moving even farther south in South Texas it has been extremely hard getting a start in music as I have expected. From the moment I decided to do rap music I knew the struggle of singing and rapping would be hard and would take time but I’ve been dedicated and still am to this day. Most people outside of texas only know a few “South Texas” rappers. The main ones people know about are SPM (South Park Mexican), DJ Screw, UGK (Underground Kings), Paul Wall, And of course Travis Scott. But do you really know texas rappers? I’ve lived in other states and done shows in several other states when talking with fans and asking if they knew some of these artists. The results were shocking when named off the list of texas rappers I listen to they didn’t know any of them or even who they were. Three or four major rappers in texas right now are Slim Thug, Z-Ro, Lucky Luciano, and Trae the Truth. Due to these rappers being from Houston they have always been considered underground and never mainstream artists. Their number bed to differ tho most of these artists have more plays and views on their music and most new mainstream rappers like Lil Pump for example. So why are they not considered mainstream rappers when they have the plays and views to support that claim. These artists put up higher numbers than artist considered mainstream yet they are not considered mainstream like Lil Pump, Lil Xan, even Kodack Black before his arrest. These Houston native rappers have millions and millions of views on YouTube. That brings me to my next question what is considered mainstream at this point and why are these rappers not recognized among the others. I have a feeling it has to do with location. The fact that Houston has made a name for itself in the music industry as an “underground” rap scene these artist that have the talent are pushed under the carpet to make way for other artist that are not quite as good. In my opinion being from Texas and having only Houston as a place of origin for rap does hinder ones ability to “blow up” as say someone from Atlanta or someone from New York or someone from California. In those other places they have more of a supporting music industry behind their artist in helping them succeed. That’s is another topic ill cover in a later post but on to my point. In South Texas it is harder to break out due to the limitations that have been placed on us just because of location and the history of that location. I can ask someone who it big mo who is fat pack who is Robert Earl Davis jr and nobody will know unless they were Houston born and bred will know those names listed.
